Check whether a bulk package is still cheaper after allowing for the portion you may not use. This free bulk-buying calculator compares the cost per usable unit with a standard package.
How to use this calculator
Enter both package prices and quantities using the same unit. Enter an estimated waste percentage for the bulk package. Use 0 if you expect to use it all. This tool assumes you use all of the standard package.
Bulk vs. Spoilage Penalty
Determine whether buying big really saves cash once leftovers or perishables get tossed.
Use the same unit for both packages, such as ounces or count. This estimate assumes you use all of the standard package.

A worked example
A 64-ounce bulk package costing $8.99 with 25% waste leaves 48 usable ounces. Its cost per usable ounce is about $0.1873. A $4.49 standard package containing 16 ounces costs about $0.2806 per ounce. Bulk is cheaper per usable ounce in this example.
The calculation: Usable bulk quantity = bulk quantity × (1 − waste percentage ÷ 100). Effective unit price = bulk price ÷ usable quantity.
Does this predict how long food stays fresh?
No. You supply the waste estimate. Storage, product condition and your household’s needs affect what you actually use. Check food-storage guidance separately and include delivery or other buying costs in your entered prices when relevant.
