Kanopy: Free Films, Documentaries and Great Courses With Your Library Card
Kanopy is a commercial-free streaming service your public library pays for. Watch films, documentaries, classic cinema, and lecture courses, plus a kids’ section, all free with your card.

“Kanopy is the only video service that makes my students smarter and lets me call it a field trip. No permission slip needed, no bus, and no one throws up in the back row.”
What is Kanopy?
Kanopy is a video streaming service built for libraries and universities. Instead of a monthly subscription, your library pays, and you watch for free. The collection leans toward thoughtful viewing: award-winning independent films, international cinema, classic movies, documentaries, and educational lecture series, including courses from The Great Courses at many libraries. There are no commercials.
Kanopy uses a ticket system. Each month your library gives you a set number of tickets. Every title shows how many tickets it costs, often based on length, and once you start it, you have a viewing window of several days to watch as often as you like. The number of tickets and the cost of titles depend on your library. Tickets reset at the start of each month and do not carry over.
There is a happy exception: Kanopy Kids. Many libraries let children watch Kanopy Kids titles without using any tickets at all.
You can watch in a web browser, on iPhone, iPad, and Android apps, and on TV devices such as Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, and others.
Why I assign it to my students
- No ads. Just the film or the lecture, uninterrupted.
- Free learning. Lecture courses on history, science, art, and more, without paying for a course subscription.
- Films you will not find everywhere. Independent and international titles that rarely show up on the big streamers.
- Free kids’ viewing. Kanopy Kids is often ticket-free.
How to use Kanopy, step by step
- Get a library card from a library that offers Kanopy. Check your library’s list of digital resources.
- Go to kanopy.com or download the Kanopy app.
- Find your library and sign in with your card number and PIN, then create your Kanopy account.
- Check your tickets. Your account shows how many you have left this month.
- Pick a title and look at its ticket cost and viewing period before you press Play.
- Watch on any device. Start on the phone, finish on the TV.
Professor Ima’s quick tips
- Save tickets for longer courses and films you really want. Short films often cost less.
- Within the viewing window, rewatch as much as you like. Great for a lecture you want to review before the pop quiz.
- Look for titles marked as costing no tickets. Some libraries include a few.
- Let the kids use Kanopy Kids mode so they stay in the ticket-free section.
- Add titles to your watchlist so you can plan next month’s viewing.
How to get a library card
Start with your local public library. Many offer a free online eCard that works for digital services right away, while others want you to visit with ID and proof of address. College students may also have Kanopy through their campus library. In California, the San Francisco Public Library offers free cards to state residents, though you complete registration in person at a branch with photo ID. If your library does not offer Kanopy, ask whether a nearby library does.
Who it’s great for
- College students: Documentaries and films that might even count as research.
- Young families: Kids’ shows and educational videos, usually without spending tickets.
- Working adults: A lecture series on a topic you have always been curious about, one episode at a time.
- Retirees: Classic cinema, travel and history courses, and foreign films with subtitles.
The money angle
Streaming subscriptions keep creeping up, and many now come with ads unless you pay extra. Kanopy will not replace every service, but for documentaries, classic films, and lecture courses, it can let you cancel or skip a paid subscription, or at least stop renting movies one at a time.
Things to watch for
- Not every library subscribes, and the ticket count differs from place to place.
- Unused tickets expire at the end of the month.
- The newest blockbusters are usually not here. Kanopy shines with indie, classic, and educational titles.
