What is Trash Nothing?

Back in the day, freecycling happened in email groups, and keeping up meant a flooded inbox. Trash Nothing was built to make that easier. It connects to many local reuse groups, including groups in the Freecycle and Freegle networks, independent groups, and groups that run on Trash Nothing itself, so you can see offers and wanted posts from several groups in one feed.

If you already read my Freecycle handout, here is the difference: Freecycle is a network of groups. Trash Nothing is a tool that lets you use many of those groups, plus others, from one screen.

Why I assign it to my students

  • It is free. The site says you never need to pay or hand over card details. It shows ads to cover costs, and an optional contribution removes them.
  • One feed, many groups. Join several nearby groups and see everything together.
  • Alerts do the watching. Set a search alert for “bookshelf” or “sewing machine” and get notified when one appears.
  • Your email stays private. Your sign-up address is not shown to other members when you message through the site.

How to use Trash Nothing, step by step

  1. Sign up free. Use the website, or download the iPhone or Android app.
  2. Join nearby groups. From the Groups page, request to join groups near you. Approval may take minutes or a few days, since volunteer moderators screen out spammers.
  3. Tune your settings. Choose how often you get digest emails, or turn on push notifications. You can also limit your feed to posts near you.
  4. Browse or search. Look through offers, or use the map to see what is close.
  5. Post an Offer or a Wanted. Add a clear photo and an honest description.
  6. Reply through the messages page. Replying by email can reveal details in your email signature, so use the built-in messages to stay private.

Professor Ima’s quick tips

  • Only free, legal, family-friendly items are allowed. No selling, swapping, or asking for money.
  • No alcohol, tobacco, weapons, prescription items, rentals, or coupons.
  • Planning to resell? You must say so in your posts and messages.
  • Each group’s moderators can add house rules, such as whether pets or loans are allowed. Read them.
  • Not every town has an active group. If yours is quiet, widen your search a little.

Who it’s great for

  • College students: moving into a dorm or out of one? Grab a mini fridge or pass yours along.
  • Young families: set alerts for high chairs, strollers, and kids’ bikes, then check them for recalls.
  • Working adults: busy people love that alerts do the browsing for you.
  • Retirees: one simple feed beats managing a pile of group emails, and decluttering becomes a good deed.

Safety tips for pickups

  • Meet in a public place for small items, or use porch pickup when you are giving.
  • Schedule pickups in daylight and let someone know where you are going.
  • Give your address only to the one person collecting, after a time is set.
  • Never pay for shipping, deposits, or “holding fees.” Real freecyclers do not charge.
  • Ask a helper to come along for heavy furniture.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trash Nothing really free?

Yes. You can use everything without paying. A voluntary contribution is optional and removes ads.

Is Trash Nothing the same as Freecycle?

No. Freecycle is a network of local groups. Trash Nothing is a separate site and app that works with many freecycling groups, including Freecycle and Freegle groups.

Why was my group request not approved right away?

Some groups are run by volunteers who review new members to keep out spam. Be patient.

Can I post services or jobs?

No. Trash Nothing is for free items only.

What if nobody takes my item?

Try a better photo, a clearer title, or a repost a few days later. If it still sits, consider donating it to a local thrift store.
